![]() Every episode of this season manages to leave a lasting impression and shows just what makes Black Mirror so effective. "San Junipero ," like many Black Mirror episodes, deals with some tragic themes but the relationship between Kelly and Yorkie is heartwarming and the ending is uncharacteristically uplifting. The aesthetics of this episode are sublime, the lead characters are endearing and the performances are masterful. What truly elevates this season though is "San Junipero" which is arguably one of the best Black Mirror episodes. While episodes like "Playtest" and "Men Against Fire" aren't quite on the same level as the others, they're still strong stories that explore the darker side of technology. ![]() Audiences are treated to yet another shocking twist in "Shut Up And Dance" and "Nosedive" perfectly explores the relatable fear of public rejection and humiliation. Even though some of the stories were larger in scale, season 3 didn't forget the show's routes. Each season has its merits but some are certainly better than others. "San Junipero" is fiction of the highest caliber, fiction so powerful it becomes ingrained in memory, and so relatable, a half-asleep recollection could easily wrap the viewer in the story, like a forgotten dream.With the show's move to Netflix came a bigger budget and the opportunity to explore grander stories. Black Mirror is one of Netflixs most unique and creative shows in history. Aside from the heart-melting storyline, it's aesthetically stunning, with a soundtrack that'll rattle around the brain. "San Junipero" is a meditation on death, a neon-drenched statement that love can transcend the greatest barriers, a reminder of the finite nature of life. Kelly, however, is only passing by, intending to die naturally. Yorkie is paralyzed and wishes to be euthanized so she can live in San Junipero full-time. ![]() In real life, Kelly and Yorkie are elderly. In this virtual world, the elderly are young and vibrant. San Junipero is a virtual resort where the consciousness of the dead live on and those at the twilight of their lives can visit. But this isn't time travel, it's a simulated reality. Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) have a romance with tons of chemistry and more elements than the periodic table. ![]() It has the series' lowest user ratings on IMDb and Letterboxd, and has one.
